Summer Curse – Prickly Heat

We all look forward to the sun but the Brits are notoriously bad at dealing with the heat.  As we sit packed into our work offices and call centres, suffering poor air conditioning and sweating in our office attire, prickly heat or heat rash can strike.

What is prickly heat?

Prickly heat occurs when un-evaporated sweat blocks the pores on the skin.  An itchy irritating rash can occur which is recognized by small, red, inflamed blotches and tiny blisters on the affected area.

Home and Herbal Remedies aim to cool and soothe the inflamed skin, soak up excess moisture and prevent infection.  However to prevent prickly heat in first place wear loose, cool, cotton clothing, get plenty of cold showers and lots of air to your body.

Candida albicans

What is Candida albicans?

All our bodies contain a yeast-like fungi call Candida albicans.  Normally the presence of Candida does not present any problems as the fungi is kept naturally in check by other micro-organisms often referred to as ‘friendly bacteria’ or ‘pro-biotics’.  Over recent years, Candida has become a growing problem for many with diet, stress and prescription drugs having an impact on the fine balance of micro-organisms in our bodies.

Most often people with an imbalance experience thrush or vaginitis which tend to thrive more readily in women but cross infection is possible between males and females.  Thrush can also be detected in the mouth and other symptoms of Candida are: athlete’s foot, fatigue, bloating, migraine style headaches, constipation, numbness, allergies, heartburn and recurrent sore throats.  Often these symptoms become worse after eating sugary or yeast rich foods and are aggravated in damp and mouldy conditions.

Managing Candida
You cannot eliminate all the Candida from your body but you can control levels through diet, relaxation, and herbal supplements.

In our society where we are intent on holding back the hands of time, the onset of menopause can be an unwelcome phase in a woman’s life.  Marking the end of our childbearing years, the menopause can be falsely perceived as the end of life as a desirable, useful member of society.  The physical symptoms are equally unattractive – hot flushes, mood swings, weight gain, thinning hair, vaginal dryness and insomnia.

Although we can’t stop the inevitability of the menopause it is possible to lessen the severity of the symptoms by following a 4 step plan – take herbal supplements, exercise, eat well and embarking on new challenges and hobbies:

The Herbal Way

There are many Herbal Remedies out there that can relieve menopausal symptoms.  Black Cohosh, Vitex and St John’s Wort are all great choices and stimulate feel good chemicals in the brain or balance hormones to limit the night sweats, reduce mood swings and fight the hot flushes and fatigue.
