We need at least seven to eight hours sleep per night in order to function properly physically, emotionally and mentally. However being able to sleep soundly is not always easy and many people experience insomnia either due to physical issues or mental agitation.

Work can be a very stressful environment to be in depending on the job you do, the people you work with and are managed by and the type of deadlines you work to. Increasingly in the UK we are working longer hours and the balance between homelife and work is distorted and unnaturally bent toward work. Work practices are becoming more complex with new technologies, productivity is rated above quality and most environments are fast paced and competitive. The work environment creates an ideal place for stress to hit us.

The lavender is out and in full bloom at the moment sending its heady relaxing scent out across gardens in the summer sun. This is a well known plant that has a distinctive musky smell and has beautiful light, purple petals. Over the centuries lavender pouches have been used to scent clothes drawers and to deter moths from wardrobes. These days it is grown in large plantations commercially to produce lavender oil for the aromatherapy industry and antiseptic purposes.

Historically there are several references to birch essential oil being used medicinally to ease muscle and joint pains. The tree is native to the north and grows to a height of 15 to 20 metres. The branches are slender with silver white bark and oval light green foliage. The Native Americans are refuted to have used birch aromatherapy oil as a general health tonic, and anti-inflammatory and as a beverage to induce sweating.
It’s anti-inflammatory properties are due to it containing a methyl salicylate which is also found in aspirin.

To encourage hair growth by activating the hair follicles try a blend of aromatherapy essential oils consisting of lavender and bay.
