Most of us at some point have had the dreaded dandruff!  This embarrassing and irritating condition refers to flaking skin on the scalp which can be very noticeable.

Dandruff is actually inflammation of the skin.  Although we are most accustomed to it occurring on the head it can occur on the face, neck, back and fold of the body.  Psoriasis has similar symptoms and the two can often be mistaken for each other.

It is unknown what exactly causes dandruff and this upsetting illness can be long term.  It may be related to a fungus similar to that of athlete’s foot or is perhaps triggered by stress, obesity, fatigue, oily skin, hygiene issues or allergic reactions to hair or skin products.

A rinse to encourage healthy hair and scalp contains anti-fungal herbs and properties.  Vinegar is included to restore the hair’s correct pH.

  • 450 ml apple cider vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons of dried sage, rosemary or thyme leaves or in combination
  • Heat the vinegar to boiling point.
  • Remove from the heat and add the herbs.
  • Cover and steep for 10 minutes.
  • Strain the herbs and discard them.
  • Pour the solution into empty shampoo bottles and label.
  • Use about 4 tablespoons in 450 ml of water as a rinse after shampooing.

There are also supplements you can take to help:

  • Evening Primrose is used to treat allergic reactions and may help against dandruff
  • Flaxseed has high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and is great for inflammatory conditions
  • Tea Tree is an essential oil that is a potent anti-fungal agent.  Mix with evening primrose oil or flaxseed oil as a scalp rub.
