Primrose the Herbal Remedy
Traditionally the herbal plant Primrose grew in woods and fields. However today this popular plant can be found in home gardens with its small pretty pale yellow flowers.
It was used years ago as a plant that could help with the treatment of wounds, gout and paralysis.
The renowned herbalist Nicholas Culpepper used it to heal wounds and treat headaches. The herbal plant contains salicylates which can be found in aspirin.
It was also a traditional expectorant so it was used to treat bronchitis. However today it is not used as much for its medicinal properties but more as a garden plant.
Culinary uses:
The flowers and leaves are used in salads. The pale yellow flowers are crystallized and use as cake decorations by confectioners.
When you see the flowers starting to bloom it is a welcome sight as it ensures that spring is on its way.
Note: If you are a keen gardener it requires well draining soils, but the plant can be planted in either shady or sunny positions.
It is a hardy perennial and grows to six inches in height. The plants are useful for borders around the garden.
