Kava Kava the popular Herb
The South Pacific is the native home to the people of Fiji and the herb known to us as Kava Kava also called Piper Methysticum. It is also known amongst the people of the island as intoxicating pepper, which reminds you more of a hot meal than an Herbal Health remedy.
The root of the plant supplies the substance which is used by various cultures to treat stress, anxiety, sleeplessness and the menopause that most women suffer at varying ages. Kava Kava has been known to increase the effect of alcohol and should be used sparingly. Another side effect is visual impairment muscle spasm, shortness of breath and yellow skin eruptions that look nasty to the naked eye. It is held in high esteem as the one of the modern Home Remedies that is constantly in demand especially by terminally ill patients.
The people of the islands in the South Pacific have held ceremonies for the last 3000 years. They still hold Kava Kava ceremonies at certain times in the year and the root is gathered and pounded or chewed to make the bitter milky liquid, mixed with water, strained and drunk by the elders. This is an active ceremony that the elders hold to commune and tune into the spirit world.
