Constipation sufferers will know how miserable this condition can make you feel.  Symptoms tend to vary from person to person with some people experiencing a spot of difficulty ‘going’, to having to ‘strain’, while others can be in extreme physical discomfort.   Symptoms such as wind, bloating and stomach cramping make it all the more unpleasant.

However the misery doesn’t stop there.  As the digestive system slows down other problems can be experienced such as:

Headaches
Irritability
Lethargy
Feeling fed up

In short constipation can ruin your day!

Here are some guidelines for ensuring everything is moving as it should:

  • Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day.  Fluids are essential for keeping the intestines working properly.
  • Keep a glass next to your bed at night and make sure you have a glass first thing in the morning.
  • Add a teaspoon of ghee to a glass of warmed milk.  This is a great home remedy for relieving constipation.  Drink it just before going to bed.
  • Begin the day with 2 to 3 glasses of warm water with lemon juice.  This helps to clear the bowels and will act as an effective preventative to constipation.
  • Papaya, guava and apple are all effective in treating constipation.  Make a fruit salad containing these fruits and munch on it throughout the day.
  • Drink warm lime water first thing.  It keeps the body and mind alert as well as eliminating constipation.
  • Flax seeds have laxative qualities.  Mix one tablespoon of flaxseeds in a glass of fresh water and leave it to stand for a couple of hours.  Drink the flaxseed water before bed and the next day your bowels will clear naturally.
  • Soak dry figs overnight and then add to your breakfast in the morning.  Voila! No constipation!
