Hog Plum - the unusual tart

Filed under: Herbal Remedies — Jane @ 1:30 pm

The Hog plum is a tree that grows twenty feet tall and the leaves are very long.  It bears clusters of green fruit that eventually turn yellow. The skin has a hard thick coat and when preparing you find it is juicy but acidic to taste. The plums are used in pies just the same as the red plums that are in the supermarkets, and still require an amount to sugar to sweeten to a suitable taste.

However there are various illnesses that the plum can be used as part of Home Remedies that can be helpful and cost effective.

The hog plum is widely used as an herbal remedy by using the plants leaf and trunk to help a pregnant woman to start in labour or if she requires her milk when feeding the baby to flow naturally, and is particularly useful to treat pre vaginal infections.

The other areas that the plum is used widely for is digestive problems, stomach cramps, colds, burns or small infected sores including the common sore throat. It has also been reported that there was research done to establish if the plum leaves helped to treat intestinal eggs and this was confirmed that there was a positive result with regard to humans and animals.

Herbal Remedies the Greek way

Filed under: Herbal Remedies — Jane @ 9:06 am

The Greek are famous for their feta cheese and oils that can be easily bought all over the country. However there are two young and delightful sage oils that can be used but do need extra care as they can be a little toxic.

One of the oils is called Dalmatian oil and the mind automatically visualises a dog with black spots on a white background. However this oil is used in Home Remedies and is used in healing oily and inflamed skin and even the odd bald patch has been known to benefit from a treatment. If you require treatment for arthritis, joint pains and other swollen and stiff joints this could be the oil for you.

It can be helpful in easing arthritis and painful muscles; there are also those who say it is helpful in treating palsy. It is an immune stimulant and can raise blood pressure. It does come with a warning that if you have a problem with blood pressure or you think you may be pregnant then avoid using this oil.

The Greek Sage is the other partner oil that can benefit a large percentage of people and is safer to use as one of the Herbal Remedies that you may have in your cupboard. The oil smells sweeter and fruitier due to the lower ketones, therefore making it a favourite with women as a treatment to relieve menstrual pain. Another use for this oil, popular on the island of Crete, is for a chesty cough, hot sweats and bronchitis.

Sandalwood - the Aromatherapy oil for you

Filed under: Aphrodisiacs, Aromatherapy Oils — Robert @ 9:02 am

These oils are all names under the umbrella of Sandalwood, a rich and sweet aroma that reminds  you of your granddad smoking a pipe and settled in for a long winters evening. It has been known to be used as an aphrodisiac and as pleasant tool to aid meditation.

Both the Indian and Sri Lankan oils have specific differences although both are effective to use as a tonic to build up the immune system in the physical body and also balance the skin whether it is dry or oily.  They are especially good if you are a man and suffer with tender skin from shaving. It can be useful in relaxation, lifts depression and is well known as a balancing oil.

Sandalwood, if being used as part of a collection of Home Remedies , will surprise the person using it for the first time as the liquid is thick and can take time to come out of the bottle.  Unless you are very patient it may be useful to use a pipette. If stored correctly it will improve with age but if you have a favourite oil then stock up as it is becoming scarce, and the prices are soaring due to the aromatherapy oil becoming so popular.

Most popular sandalwood essential oils are from India and Sri Lanka although there are also Australian Aromatherapy Oils on the market but these may not have as strong an aroma (Santal Spicatum).

There are new sandalwood essential oils coming in from different countries that will enhance the scents once they have aged.  Sandalwood is known to be one of the Herbal Remedies that blends with almost every thing, including Atlas, Cedar wood , Enrol, vanilla and many more.

Bergamot the Essential Aromatherapy Oil

Filed under: Aromatherapy Oils — Shirley @ 12:58 pm

The Bergamot oil is taken from a tree that can grow to four metres high and can be found in south East Asia.  However, it was Italy that made the essential oil well known as the town of Bergamo was the first to sell the oil.

The scent of the oil is basically citrus, yet fruity and sweet, with a warm spicy floral quality and is reminiscent of neroli as well as lavender oil. The colour ranges in shades of green and flavours Earl Grey tea.
The aromatherapy oil is used to create a more relaxed atmosphere and relieves urinary infections, looking after the main organs including the liver and spleen.  It can be multi functional as it is useful in fighting sensitive skin infections like eczema, acne and psoriasis and also cold sores.

There are therapeutic uses with this Aromatherapy oil as it is an antiseptic, digestive, febrifuge, analgesic, and deodorant. However, there are certain precautions required as it can burn the skin if it is sensitive and therefore advisable that you keep out of the sun if using it on your skin.

Bergamot oil blends well with other Aromatherapy Oils including Clary-Sage, Ylang-ylang, Sandalwood, Frankincense and many more. The blend that works well with this aromatherapy oil is Evening Primrose oil.  It is easy to obtain and will be an asset in your collection of Home Remedies .

The Essential Rose

Filed under: Aromatherapy Oils — Jane @ 12:56 pm

The rose essential oil, or Rosa Damscena to give it its correct name, is one of the most popular and can be one of the most expensive aromatherapy essential oils.

The Arabics first distilled the aromatherapy oil and the Romans and Egyptians all loved the oil and put it to good use in medicines, perfumes and cosmetics.

The first race of people to make fragrant pomades in the shape of cones was the Egyptians, who placed them on their heads, and they would melt with the heat from their bodies making them smell nice.  The Romans featured flowered pomanders in their gardens and would have petals on the floors of their banqueting halls in an attempt to produce a calming effect on people.

However, the rose is the flower that is used in weddings and for romance and is well known as the most romantic flower for the pursuit of love.  Beauty cosmetics, soaps and perfumes with the essential oil as an ingredient are now available all over the world.

The ‘rose’ aromatherapy oil is anti-viral and can be used to help with depression, dry skin and helps with wounds, sprains, insomnia and for the chocolate lover it is also used in Turkish delight.

Sea Buckthorn Berry the Natural Cosmetic

Filed under: Home Remedies — Robert @ 12:53 pm

You can help your skin and stay looking younger by looking at vitamins that will help to protect the skin.
Skin protection is found in using the pulp of the Sea Buckthorn Berry that has been used by herbalists for years and is now emerging as one of the modern bio-active substances that can be found in the oil from the seed and the pulp.  It is often used for creams and sun care products.

It has been used in research as an indicator that the products including creams that are used in dermatological clinics are helping with the regeneration of skin cells.  This has the effect of healing wounds and building up the skin tissue.

Sea buckthorn has beta-carotene in it which is a reddish colour so beware if using the cream as a tanning lotion unless you reduce the strength you will end up looking like a tangerine. There is a large cosmetic industry marketing the Herbal Remedies that can be useful in anti-aging creams, however, it is possible to use the herb on its own as one of your own Home Remedies .

If you are buying any product, check the ingredients and use a skin test on yourself if unsure of any allergic reactions.

Seaweed the way to a slimmer you

Filed under: Aromatherapy Oils — Jane @ 8:51 am

Seaweed is an essential oil that smells a little bit like cedar wood but is an essential oil in its own right. The oil is distilled from ‘lamindaria digitata’  or kelp as we know it. However the seaweed that is sold in tablet form over the counter is a totally different source of ‘kelp’.

When the aromatherapy oil is used by a Herbalist or an Aromatherapist, they will often blend the oil to use on the skin as arthritis massage oil, but the oil can be blended as an essential oil cream to be used for detoxifying and even water retention. Therapists say they are reminded of being in a seaside town when using the oil and you can smell the salt in the air as if you were standing at the seawaters edge.

The use of seaweed, both as a dried plant or fresh, can look after water retention problems by draining the fluid and increase the circulation allowing the skin to open up and supply the nutrients the body requires. This in turn will speed up ones metabolism and allow the lymphatic system to push the fluid through the body therefore eliminating toxins and also helping with the tangerine looking  lumpy bits of cellulite areas of the body, thus allowing the skin to glow.
